Turabian Bibliographies: Introduction

Introduction

This guides focuses on how to properly format works for a Turabian bibliography. Examples of the most commonly used source types are provided. For more detail, consult the manual.

Please note that spacing and indentation in the examples are not compliant with the Turabian manual.

Always consult with your professor concerning his/her preferences for formatting citations.

Books

The basic pattern is

Author's Last Name, Author's First Name. Title of Book: Subtitle of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher's Name, Date of Publication.

E-Books

The basic pattern is

Author's Last Name, Author's First Name. Title of Book: Subtitle of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher's Name, Date of Publication. URL.

You may substitute the name of the database for the URL.

Reference Works

The basic pattern is

Editor's Last Name, Editor's First Name, ed. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher's Name, Date of Publication. 

Reference works are typically only cited in notes and are not included in the bibliography. Citations for online works must include the accessed date and URL.

The basic pattern is

Author #1's Last Name, Author #1's First Name, and Author #2's First and Last Name. "Title of Article: Subtitle of Article." Title of Journal Volume Number, Issue Number (Date of Publication): Page Range of Article.

Online Articles

The basic pattern is

Author #1's Last Name, Author #1's First Name, and Author #2's First and Last Name. "Title of Article: Subtitle of Article." Title of Journal Volume Number, Issue Number (Date of Publication): Page Range of Article. URL.

For online journal articles, include a URL. If the article has a DOI, create a URL by prefixing "http://dx.doi.org/" to the DOI. 

Sacher, John M. "The Sudden Collapse of the Louisiana Whig Party." Journal of Southern History 65, no. 2 (May 1999): 221-248. JSTOR.

The basic pattern is

Abbreviate dissertation as diss. If consulted online, provide a URL.

Pickard, Scott D. "Co-Workers in the Field of Souls: The Civil War Partnership between Union Chaplains and the U.S. Christian Commission, 1861-1865." PhD diss., Kansas State University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/15271.

Footnote:

Citation Generators

Most library databases include a button or link that produces a citation for a reference list. While these are useful for saving time, these citations are machine-generated. As such, they must always be checked against the publication manual to ensure they are accurate and complete.
