Research Searching Tips: How to Research Smarter

This guide will provide tips to get better search results whether in a database or on the internet.

What is Nesting?

Nesting specifies the order the search should be run. This can be helpful when you do not have multiple search boxes such as for Boolean Searching. The researcher uses parentheses to indicate the terms to be searched first.

Examples of nesting

MUSIC AND (BRAIN OR COGNITIVE)
(ANXIETY OR STRESS) AND (ADOLESCENT OR CHILD)
FIREFIGHTERS AND (DISASTER OR TERRORISM) AND "EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT"
"CRITICAL THINKING" AND (HIGHER EDUCATION OR COLLEGE STUDENTS)
